I know, I know, that is absolutely not what you think of when you hear the term illegal alien – Americans in Mexico. But that’s exactly the situation for majority of the early 1 million Americans currently estimated to be living in Mexico.

There were 740,000 estimated Americans in Mexico in 2015, of which only 65,000 had a legal right to live there.

The US State Department estimates that there has been a 38% increase in the number of Americans living in Mexico since 2015, spurred by improved economic conditions.  This brings the current estimate closer to the 1 million mark.
