In a move that could signal the beginning of a new Euro/American war, that has been 8 years in the making, hostilities between America and its European allies has reached a crisis point not recently seen after Russian President, Vladimir Putin ordered what he termed as a “special military operation” into Ukraine. Defying calls from western countries for restraint, Putin had previously gone ahead to recognize the two Ukrainian separatist regions of the “People’s Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk.
The late night attacks early Thursday morning in Ukraine came after Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation saying that it was “to protect” the Russian speaking separatist Donbas region. There are reports across both social and mainstream media of explosions in cities across Ukraine including the capital Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Kramatorsk.
Stocks plunged further with the Dow losing a further 500 points after the announcement.
Biden responded with a statement of support, saying that “the prayers of the entire world are with the people of Ukraine”. Biden also stated that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Zelensky adding that “I condemned this unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces. I briefed him on the steps we are taking to rally international condemnation, including tonight at the United Nations Security Council,” Mr. Biden said in the statement.
It is worth remembering however that current Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky came into power after a coup against the previous arguably neutral but reported as a pro-Russian administration of Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych on February 20th 2014. It is worth noting that this coincides exactly 8 years to the day that Vladimir Putin chose to announce his recognition of the two Independent states of the Donbas region, followed by the Thursday February 24th incursion into Ukraine.
Hypocritically of course, America whose hand in the February 2014 coup is documented, as well as the EU not only accepted this coup, but lauded it and went on to recognize the newly installed right wing administrations that have led to today’s extreme right wing pro-western government in Ukraine that has openly courted right wing fascists.
Contrast this to France, the West, and ECOWAS-CEDEAO’s rejection of the clearly popular revolutionary transition government of Mali led by Colonel Assimi Goita, and the double standards are immediately clear. The west loves to wield “democracy and corruption” as the excuses they use to support and even invade nations when it is in the economic interests of the west to do so, but turns around and pretends to be interested in democracy, human rights and corruption when they do not like the administration in question.
It should come as no surprise then that in the age of social media, the west’s violation of the post-cold war peace that has led to the current impasse will not go without scrutiny. The current impasse that could lead to the third big Euro/American war within a century did not start with Russian incursion into Crimea in 2018, but with American incursion into Ukraine right on Russia’s doorstep in February 2014.
